"Drawing is not what one sees but what one can make others see." Edgar Degas

“It takes 25 years to learn to draw, one hour to learn to paint.” Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres

This course provides students with a solid foundation in drawing. The aim is to enhance students’ awareness of and sensitivity to visual art through engaging in the intellectual and technical processes by which drawings come into being. We will learn key skills and materials in drawing in conversation with developments throughout art history and contemporary art.

Learning Goals:
1. develop understandings of art elements such as light, composition, movement, texture and organization as related to drawing
2. demonstrate understanding of contour line, positive and negative space, perspective, sighting of angles and measurements of relationships in drawing
3. develop visual arts vocabulary and practice visual arts analysis and critique
4. master basic skills and experiment with drawing mediums

Mediums:
- pencil and graphite
- charcoal and chalk
- pastel
- conté crayon
- pen and ink
- (for kids: markers and crayons)

This course would also be great for anyone working on developing a portfolio for applications to art school. Depending on interest, I would also be happy follow up this course with painting classes for watercolor, acrylic and oil paints.
