Kathmandu

Kiran Mathema was born in Kathmandu, Nepal. He won a national scholarship to the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, where he got his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. Subsequently, he founded Mathema and Associates in Kathmandu in 1995. The firm undertook several urban regeneration projects and implemented 11 building commissions over the course of four years. All his projects (office, residential or academic) are designed as zero-energy buildings that take full advantage of natural energy sources. Some of this professional work has been published in several architectural magazines in India and Nepal. During this period, he also provided voluntary services to local municipalities to guide large-scale historic preservation and urban redevelopment projects. Intrigued with the challenges of urbanization and the emerging global economy, Kiran enrolled at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in1998 for the Masters program in Urban Studies and Real Estate with a merit-based scholarship. During and after MIT, he worked at Wallace Flyodd Design Group, Boston – leading urban design efforts of the Central Artery (the Big Dig) project and design of the Logan Airport Intermodal Station. He joined Michael Baker Jr. Inc in 2000 to head the Urban Planning and Design Group as Assistant Director. Under his leadership, the firm implemented several key citywide initiatives in Washington DC. Currently, he is Design Director at Ehrenkrantz, Eckstut and Kuhn Architects in Washington DC. He is spearheading the firm’s largest projects in the US and overseas. His award-winning projects span the globe, in cities of the US, Germany, Singapore, China, India, South Korea and Nepal. In addition to his professional practice, he has continually been involved in academia. He served as lecturer, visiting faculty, and teaching assistant for numerous graduate and undergraduate courses in architecture and urban design at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge; Catholic University, Washington DC; and in Nepal Engineering College, Kathmandu.
